A simple introduction to getting started with Hermes Agent & OpenRouter.
This is a manifesto for Nigerian Innovators; and because I love, love, love the NousResearch guys and definitely love Hermes Agent. Here we go! Hermes Agent is open source and built in Python, so it’s easy for developers to extend. It sits between a Claude Code style CLI and an OpenClaw style messaging platform agent, with a wide range of skills and extensibility. It has a strong self learning and self correction loop.

The Hermes Ecosystem: Your AI Command Center
Think of Hermes Agent not as a single chatbot, but as a sophisticated, multi-agent orchestra. You, the user, are the conductor.
Here is how the components work together:
1. The Hermes Agent (The Conductor)
This is the orchestrator. It receives your high-level goal (“Write a marketing strategy for X”). It breaks that goal into executable sub-tasks, assigns them to specialists, monitors their progress, and synthesizes the final output. It manages the complexity so you don’t have to.
2. Agent Profiles (The Specialists)
You don’t need one “jack-of-all-trades” AI. You need specialists. Hermes provides specialized profiles, each with a unique persona, each assigned a specific model (e.g., Claude 3.5 Sonnet, GPT-4o) based on its specialization, and a domain-specific skill set; see examples below:

3. Beads (`bd`) (The Project Manager)
This is your project management system. When a task is complex (e.g., “Build a feature and write the documentation”), you don’t just chat; you create a Bead.

`bd show <id>`: You track its progress.
`bd close <id>`: You mark it complete.
Beads ensure that complex, multi-step projects are tracked, accountable, and never lost in the chat history.
The Advanced Power-Ups: Making AI Yours
To move beyond simple Q&A and achieve true competitive advantage, you must leverage the advanced features:
OpenRouter: think of OpenRouter as an AI model access marketplace. You load up by buying credits that acts as the general purse for all your AI access. Funny thing is that Gemini suggested OpenRouter to me when I kept moaning about my budget and how I am price sensitive etc. LOL
Hindsight Memory: This is the agent’s long-term memory. It doesn’t just remember the chat; it learns from the outcome. If a previous attempt failed, Hindsight captures why it failed, ensuring the next attempt is smarter. This is how the system improves itself.
Skills: These are the specialized tools (e.g., `github-pr-workflow`, `web_search`, `linear`) that give the agent hands and eyes. They allow the agent to act in the real world.
Firecrawl & Bridges (The Senses): These are the eyes and ears. `Firecrawl` allows the agent to read any webpage, turning the vastness of the internet into actionable context. The WhatsApp/Telegram bridges allow the agent to receive instructions and deliver results outside the chat window.
The Workflow: From Idea to Execution
Here is the sequence for a complex task:
1. Define (The Goal): You define the high-level goal (e.g., “Develop a go-to-market strategy for Product X”). (1/2)
2. Plan (The Blueprint): The Hermes Agent uses the `plan` mode to break the goal into bite-sized, executable tasks.
3. Execute (The Action): The Agent assigns tasks to specialists (e.g., `Strategist` researches market gaps; `Coding` builds a prototype; `Content-Writer` drafts the pitch).
4. Monitor (The Oversight): You track progress using Beads.
5. Refine (The Polish): The `QA-Agent` reviews the output, and the `Self-Improvement Loop` ensures the system learns from the review process.
The takeaway is this: You are not paying for tokens; you are paying for the orchestration, the intelligence, and the execution. Once you are comfortable and enjoying Hermes Agent, find the active community of others like you on X and your life will not remain same.
If you have a decent machine (read: GPU), you can download a capable AI model to work locally with Hermes Agent as the default orchestrator model. You can also connect a host of messaging apps so you can chat with Hermes Agent remotely.
